She complained that the fee, RM380 paid is expensive yet not inclusive of the printed GAHP guidelines. Understandably, I can accept that with the seminar held in the hotel and light refreshment provided, it is acceptable to charge the attendees certain amount of fee. However, charging each person RM380 is not a fair price. I heard that the fee now has spiraled to RM 580 per head. This is way too much already!
This makes us doubt about the organizer’s sincerity and spirit of sharing. If the organizer is really sincere and considerate enough, he should make it more affordable to benefit more farmers. Not all farmers are rich and not all farmers are successful.
To be honest, if not for the certificate nobody will care to spend so much of their precious time and money for this seminar. Nothing much can be learned except it only gives the newbie a slight insight of the industry, to say the least.
For those who have not heard of GAHP. Let me explain a bit of its history*.
GAHP is a course conducted by the Dept Veterinary Service (DVS or Jabatan Perkhidmatan Haiwan). The purpose of this course is to educate the new BH investors as to how to manage the BH in a proper and hygienic way according to DVS’s standard.
This course was initiated by Dr Fadzilah, a very respectable and professional lady senior veterinary officer from the DVS. She did it with the good intention to help the growth of this industry and to help educate all the BH operators with good knowledge of animal husbandry in the BH.
She started this programme in 2005 conducting such courses personally across the country for thousands of farmers. It was a one day course and it was FOC with everything including lunch provided by the DVS and a certificate of attendance was also issued to every participant. Dr Fadzilah later has been promoted to take charge bigger role. Her successor is Dr Reduan, another very dedicated gentleman, following her footstep to continue with the mission.
As the industry grows and more new farmers venturing into this business, the Federal budget is no longer adequate and the DVS has to outsource to continue the awareness programme.
Today, the GAHP seminar is no longer free and is compulsory for BH owner to attend so that BH permit can be obtained. It has deviated from the original policy which is only to instill the awareness and be sponsored by government fund. These days it is obvious that some opportunists are exploiting the situation to enrich themselves. It also becomes a tool for the officials to find excuse to make money out from BN farmers.

Some seminars are very expensive because they have to invite professional speakers and do marketing. Marketing involves huge investment as they have to advertise in TVs, radio and many more. So, GAHP seminars are expensive. These seminars are successful marketing seminars and audiences are very interested to attain the seminars.
ReplyDeleteThis is bull shit, the very reason that it has become expensive is that greedy people are behind the scene to make easy money. What we want is speaker from DVS and all for the sake of the certificate and most of us know more about the swiftlets than alot of the so called invited speakers but for the sake of getting the GAHP is compulsory, we paid unwillingly. This proving that we, the BH owners do compromised and even pay the high price. Sucessful marketing seminars and who ask for that and audiences very interested only at getting the certificate so as to ensure the safety of their BHs.
